Cabinets and countertops: stars of the kitchen and bath
You’d be hard-pressed to find a duo that’s more inseparable than kitchen cabinets and countertops. One doesn’t work without the other, and that's why it is so important to think about colors, textures, and styles when designing your room. As long as they coordinate well, you can mix and match to highlight and contrast, and we encourage our customers to place samples side by side so they can see how they work.
Use color to create a dazzling yet, functional kitchen
You don’t need to use the same color for the cabinets and countertops. We often tell our customers that combining neutral colors, such as white cabinets with black or gray quartz countertops, can make for an exciting visual. On the other hand, try not to overdo it with bold colors; it's all about balance. If you go with bold cupboards, countertops should be neutral shades and vice versa. This also applies to the bathroom; keep in mind that vanities aren’t just cupboards, so you also have to think about coordinating sinks and counters.
Cabinets and countertops still need to be functional and not just aesthetic, so be aware of each material’s characteristics so it meets your needs. For example, if you have kids and make many peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and sweet drinks, you’ll want a material that's both durable and stain-resistant. Alternatively, if you’re a small family, your needs might be more flexible.
Balance, style & your home’s decor
Your cabinets and countertops should coordinate your home's design. For example, traditional cupboard sand countertops in a light, airy, and urban contemporary home may not exactly work with the home's decor. There is an overwhelming choice of cabinet styles, from the Shaker-style (known for simple lines and a distinctive look) to the glass front, beadboard, flat-front; plywood, and unfinished wood cupboards.
As for countertops, popular materials include quartz, granite, soapstone, marble, ceramic and porcelain tile, solid surfaces like laminate, stainless steel, and concrete. Depending on your style and what you want in functionality, one of these will fit the bill. If you are looking for an elegant, luxurious feeling, granite is a good option; for a unique antique-like patina, consider soapstone and marble is impressive, opulent, and palatial.
